Charles Vyse was born in 1882 and began his career in the heart of England's ceramics industry, apprenticing at Doulton in Burslem. He studied at the Hanley School of Art and the Royal College of Art in London, where he developed a more artistic approach to pottery, moving beyond industrial production; in 1909 he won the Prix de Rome, enabling him to study sculpture and refine his skills further.

In 1919, Vyse set up a small studio in Chelsea, London, with his wife, Nell Vyse, who assisted with glaze work and studio management.
