After a turbulent childhood and academic struggles, Trenchard managed to secure a commission in the British Army through a militia with lower entry standards. His first deployment took him to India, but he did not see action until the outbreak of the Boer War, when he volunteered for service in South Africa. In October 1900, however, he was caught in an ambush, suffering severe injuries, including a damaged lung and partial paralysis on one side.

During his convalescence in Switzerland, a stroke of good fortune changed his fate. A bobsleighing accident corrected a spinal injury, allowing him to walk again. Trenchard returned to action in South Africa, and after the Boer War, he served in Nigeria.

In 1912, he returned to England due to health concerns and growing dissatisfaction with his military career. Around this time, he was introduced to the possibilities of aviation, which inspired him to learn to fly and join the Royal Flying Corps.

With the outbreak of the First World War, Trenchard was tasked with forming a new squadron, which he did with great success. In 1915, he became Military Wing leader and was soon appointed commander of the Royal Flying Corps in the field, a role he held until the formation of the Independent Air Force. In 1918, he was appointed the first Chief of Air Staff but resigned after just thirteen days following political clashes.

Trenchard returned to the Air Force in 1919 as Chief of Air Staff, a position he held until 1929. During this period, he was instrumental in shaping the Air Force into the institution it is today. After leaving the military, he served as Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police for four years.

One of the most remarkable lots in the sale is a large silver salver by the Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company, presented to Trenchard on the occasion of his marriage on 17 July 1920. The salver was gifted by his fellow officers of the Royal Scots Fusiliers and is signed by each member. Perhaps the most recognizable signature is that of Winston Churchill, then Secretary of State for War.

Trenchard first encountered Churchill in India during his initial deployment, where the two were fierce rivals on the polo field. This encounter marked the beginning of an important and historic relationship. It was Churchill who reappointed Trenchard as Chief of Air Staff in 1919 and played a pivotal role in supporting him throughout his tenure.

Another standout lot from the collection is this rare Five Star car pennant. The rank of Marshal of the Royal Air Force (Five Star) is the highest in the UK RAF, and since its institution in 1919, only 27 individuals have held the title, including five members of the Royal Family. The first of this distinguished group was Trenchard, promoted to the rank in 1927. From that point onward, this pennant would have flown proudly on his staff car.
