Kent’s Artistic Legacy Continues

Following the success of last summer’s inaugural offering, when nearly 100 works found enthusiastic new owners, Sworders is delighted to present the second instalment of artwork from the Kent County Council collection.

This compelling body of work holds a special place in the cultural story of the county. Much of it was originally acquired over 40 years ago for the Kent Visual Arts Loan Scheme (KVALS), an inspired initiative created to bring art directly into schools and workplaces. For many, these pieces offered daily access to creativity and inspiration at a time when it might otherwise have been out of reach. With KVALS no longer running and the collection stored away for more than a decade, these artworks now present a rare opportunity to reconnect with the county’s visual heritage.

Unsurprisingly, Kent itself is at the heart of the collection. From anonymous rural landscapes and Oast house silhouettes to evocative coastal scenes, many works capture the county’s distinctive character. There are also recognisable views, including those of Whitstable, Margate, Broadstairs, Herne Bay, Gravesend, Maidstone and Chatham. In our 10 March Paint. Print. Sculpt. sale, we are pleased to offer over 150 lots, representing a rich variety of styles, techniques and periods. With estimates ranging from under £100 up to £3,000-£5,000, the auction provides opportunities for all collectors to engage with the sale, from first-time buyers to seasoned enthusiasts.

Notable highlights include beautifully observed watercolours by Edward Bawden, alongside striking prints by Sidney Nolan, Robert Tavener, and Graham Clarke. Photography also takes centre stage within this tranche of the collection, featuring compelling works by Tony Ray-Jones, Terry Hulf, and Timothy Fagan, each bringing their unique lens to the people and places of Kent.
