We are pleased to offer a rare and remarkable limited edition Lalique ‘Caryatid’ figure in our 30 April Design sale. Produced in 2005, this exquisite piece pays tribute to the enduring legacy of René and Marc Lalique, whose architectural glass designs have left a lasting impression on the decorative arts.
René Lalique’s craftsmanship is celebrated worldwide, with notable works including the stunning glass installations at St. Matthew’s Church in Jersey. In addition, he produced a plethora of wall lights, panelling and fountains that adorned some of the finest buildings of the early 20th century.

On René’s passing in 1945, his son, Marc Lalique, took on the firm, and initially renovated the Wingen-sur-Moder factory after the damage it had taken during the war. In his time, he also introduced crystal to the firm, which gave post-war pieces a different look and feel. He too carried on this baton of architectural glass, designing the ‘Chêne’ and ‘Cactus’ tables which are still in production today and highly coveted by collectors.

This particular figure takes its inspiration from one of Lalique’s most ambitious projects: the grand fountain created for the 1925 Exposition des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. Standing at 15 metres tall and featuring 128 caryatid figures, the fountain was a striking display of artistry and innovation. The limited-edition figure reflects the caryatid elements of this significant installation and was produced in a very exclusive run of just three pieces. Weighing over 40kg, the production process of this piece would be exceedingly difficult and costly.
For the collector, the ‘Caryatid’ figure offers a unique opportunity to own an exclusive piece of Lalique’s high quality modern creations.

In Japan, sound carries meaning far beyond what we hear. Few objects embody this idea more powerfully than the bonsho, large temple bells whose resonant tones have marked the passage of time, called communities to reflection, and echoed through centuries of spiritual life.
