If I could take home a few pieces from this sale, it would be Walter Dolphyn’s ‘The Duck That Ruled the Roost’, a print from Marc Chagall and a gouache by Cecil Collins.
As a self-confessed collector, the two Walter Dolphyn works really speak to my magpie tendencies these hyper realistic but also joyful pieces pulled me in with their arrangements of childhood treasures. Dolphyn’s artwork always tends to come from a place of humour: ‘The Duck That Ruled the Roost’ shows us toy figurines of army soldiers, champion footballers and cyclists whilst it is the duck that sits atop this painting and rules the roost. This is a piece I would love to find hiding under my Christmas tree…HINT, HINT!
Walter Dolphyn (Belgian, b.1963) 'The Duck that Ruled the Roost', £600 - £1,000
To quote a rather stellar 1990s rom com movie this Marc Chagall print ‘feels like how being in love should be. Floating through a dark blue sky’. Sadly, there is no violin-playing goat featured in this print but two lovers clinging onto a beautiful bird with a calm bay and sailboat below. The colours and whimsy of this print are something I would love to have on my walls.
Marc Chagall (Russian-French, 1887-1985) 'La Baie' (Mourlot 356), £300 - £500
With the cold winter air becoming chillier, I am longing to feel the warmth of the sun like in this Cecil Collins ‘Trees and sunburst’. This painting really does give a warm and sunny feeling which would be a joy to own.
Cecil Collins (1908-1989) Trees and sunburst, £800 - £1,200
