Paul Beck (British, b.1922) has a close association with Saffron Walden and the wider East Anglian artistic community, having lived in the town during the 1960s before later settling in Shropshire, Norfolk and, finally, Wales. Following his early artistic training, Beck studied at the Royal College of Art between 1950 and 1953, where he developed the strong draughtsmanship and printmaking skills that would become central to his practice. He had many joint exhibitions with Edward Bawden and John Bolam. He also had his work exhibited at the Royal Academy summer exhibition. After a period working in London, he moved to Saffron Walden in 1959, attracted by the area's thriving artistic environment and growing reputation as a centre for painters and printmakers. From 1963 until 1970, he served as Senior Lecturer at the Cambridge College of Art, where he influenced a generation of students while continuing to pursue his own artistic career.

Alongside his teaching, Beck established a successful career as a designer for the theatre. He produced posters, programmes and publicity material for the Cambridge Theatre Company under the direction of Richard Cottrell, creating striking graphic designs that combined clarity with artistic sophistication. This work led to an appointment in 1970 with the internationally touring Prospect Theatre Company, directed by Ian Mackintosh and Toby Robertson, for whom he continued to produce promotional material. His growing reputation was recognised with the award of an Arts Council bursary, enabling him to work at the Northcott Theatre in Exeter and further develop his distinctive approach to theatre design.

Beck was also an accomplished and highly regarded printmaker. During the 1960s he was closely associated with Cambridge Print Editions, a pioneering cooperative that promoted original printmaking by artists working in and around Cambridge. His etchings and lithographs were exhibited regularly with the group and were noted for their sensitive observation, refined composition and technical assurance. Working across painting, drawing and printmaking, Beck's imagery often reflected the landscapes, architecture and atmosphere of the places in which he lived, interpreted with a quiet lyricism and careful attention to line and tone. 

His work is represented in the permanent collection of the Fry Art Gallery, Saffron Walden, whose collection celebrates the artists of North West Essex and the wider East Anglian tradition. Beck's inclusion within this important collection reflects his lasting contribution to the region's artistic heritage and his significance as both an educator and practising artist. His prints and paintings continue to be appreciated for their craftsmanship, understated elegance and enduring connection with the landscapes and cultural life of East Anglia.
