The celebrated Fairhaven Collection was assembled across generations of the Anglo-American family during the late 19th and first half of the 20th century. It encompasses works from Anglesey Abbey near Cambridge and South Walsham Hall in Norfolk, alongside pieces from the family’s earlier homes at Park Close and Bakeham House near Windsor, and their substantial London residence in Park Street, Mayfair.

This December, Sworders will present a selected group of works from the collection as part of its three-day Fine Interiors auction, offering a rare opportunity to acquire pieces with an exceptional sense of provenance and place.

At the heart of the sale is an important collection of natural history and topographical drawings assembled by Henry Broughton, 2nd Lord Fairhaven (1900–1973). Forming part of the extensive collection of books, paintings and works on paper that he built during the second quarter of the 20th century, they reflect both the breadth of his interests and the discerning eye with which he collected.

Following his death, a number of Lord Fairhaven’s botanical paintings and watercolours were presented to the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge. The works now coming to auction are notable for their remarkable state of preservation, having been carefully stored in folio boxes in the library at Kirtling Tower for much of the past half-century.

The wider collection reflects the tastes and interests of successive generations of the Fairhaven family, encompassing gold-mounted tortoiseshell boxes, sporting art, botanical and ornithological decorated porcelain, silver, furniture and decorative objects. Together, they offer a glimpse into a collection shaped by natural history, travel, sporting life and the decorative arts.

Sworders’ December Fine Interiors sale will take place over three days, opening with The Lord and Lady Fairhaven Collection on Tuesday 8 December at 10am. Further highlights and the full collection will be revealed in the lead-up to the auction.
