Sworders Auctioneers are pleased to announce the introduction of a dedicated Indian art section within its bi-annual Asian Art sales. This new focus will showcase high-quality works of art, manuscripts, miniature paintings, metalwork, ceramics, glass, wood, stone, and textiles from the Indian subcontinent, spanning from the early ancient to the modern-day period.

Already well established, Sworders’ Asian Art sales are a cornerstone of the international auction calendar and are fully previewed at Sworders London Gallery, located in the heart of the capital. These previews coincide with Asian Art Week in London, attracting leading dealers, collectors, and institutions from around the world. From Rajput, Mughal and Sikh miniature paintings to Buddhist, Jain and Hindu sculpture, our auctions have long featured superb and finely crafted pieces. The introduction of a dedicated Indian art section ensures these works receive the focused attention and enhanced visibility they deserve.

Highlights have included the Mughal miniature Shah Jahan in the Time of Youth, ascribed to Govardhan, the celebrated Indian painter who entered imperial service during the reign of Emperor Akbar and continued to work at the Mughal court under Shah Jahan. Attracting significant international interest, this finely painted work achieved a final price of £54,600.

Another notable highlight was a collection of superb Company School watercolours from The Sally Hunter and Ian Posgate Collection, Badgemore Grange, where five paintings sold collectively for nearly £100,000.

More recently, in 2025, a Mughal painting of a seated nobleman, attributed to Hajji Muhammad Husayn, sold for £16,900, while a group of three Company School paintings on mica depicting rare religious scenes achieved nearly £13,000, selling to a US-based collector. Indian bronzes have also performed well at auction, highlighted by a 12th-century bronze of the eight-armed goddess Vajra tara that realised £273,000, one of the highest prices ever paid at auction for a Pala Dynasty bronze.

Sworders offer a fully bespoke service from initial consultation through to final sale, including expert valuations, comprehensive condition reporting, seamless payment facilitation, and international shipping solutions; ensuring a smooth and professional experience for consignors and buyers alike.
