C H BRANNAM POTTERY COLLECTION REQUEST A VALUATION CONTACT A SPECIALIST
Brannam Pottery was founded in Barnstaple, Devon, originally by Thomas Backway Brannam. Comparable with Doulton, their early production consisted of similiar forms: utilitarian pieces, tiles, bricks, and domestic pottery.

Charles Hubert Brannam (1855–1937), son of Thomas, joined the family business at just age twelve in 1867. He transformed the business, and persuaded his father to allow him to set up an art pottery, around 1879. This new venture saw the company start to produce decorative wares and would go on to be a monumental shift for the business.

Queen Victoria admired their work, and in 1885 she ordered some wares from Brannam. The style of the designs - rich in coloured slip glazes, and deep sgraffito incised detailing - are characteristics that set the Devon potters apart from their London and Northern contemporaries.

James Dewdney, one of the designers well represented in this collection from Norfolk, was Brannam's most notable designer, from the early years through to the turn of the century. His work is very aesthetic and was influenced by ‘Japonisme’ in the late 1870s and 1880s. Many of the works are of large proportions, and were often sold through Liberty’s of London.
Some of the designers featured in this private collection had worked previously for Doulton, including William Baron, well known for his fish and aquatic designs. Others represented in the collection include Owen Davies and Frank Thomas.

With eye-catching colours and bold yet intricate designs, Brannam Pottery remains as popular as ever. The artists Gilbert and George have a great collection of Brannam, and some of the pieces featured in our upcoming sale were previously exhibited at 'Display of Barum Ware, Liberty Arts and Crafts Exhibition', 16 May - 15 June 1991.
