Our Asian Art Department shares an insight into the collection of Chinese Porcelain from collection of Dr Jonathan Broido (1941-2008) in our upcoming 19 May Asian Art Sale.

We are proud to present a single owner collection of early Chinese porcelain from the collection of Dr Jonathan Broido (1941-2008). This unique collection encompasses early Chinese ceramics from the Tang Dynasty to fine porcelain from the Qing Dynasty.
Dr Jonathan Broido (1941-2008) was a professor of mathematics and philosophy. He received his PhD from the University of Pittsburgh and lectured in the US, Israel and the UK, in philosophy, mathematics, AI and interdisciplinarity. He was also an avid collector and lecturer on antiques and rugs - known for his expertise and love of Asian ceramics and rare and archaic Turkoman weavings. He travelled throughout Asia acquiring pieces, as well as making finds in London's antique markets and the US.
A Chinese Ding ware vase (£300-500)
Highlights include Song dynasty Ding ware ceramics such as a white-glazed vase, formerly from the Carl Kempe collection, and with a label to the base indicating its loan to the Oriental Ceramic Society Exhibition, and a black-glazed bowl bought from Sotheby’s, Olympia London in 2004. Other early examples include a Tang dynasty cup in an intricate sancai-glaze, also purchased from Sotheby’s, Olympia London, in 2003.

Unique Ming dynasty (1368-1644) ceramics include a Wanli blue and white lobed jar painted with dragons and phoenixes amongst clouds, and a fahua-glazed meiping in dark blue, decorated in a similar style to a vase in the British Museum (museum number Franks.67.).

Dr Broido also had a taste for fine Korean ceramics, such as a unique punch’ong cocoon vase, Choson dynasty, 15th-16th century, bought from The Toguri Collection, Sotheby's, Olympia London, 10 June 2004. A Korean celadon stem cup and stand, possibly Goryeo dynasty (918-1392), decorated in a crackled pale sea-green glaze, and another celadon cylindrical jar and cover, serve as stand out examples within the group.

Our Asian Art Sale takes place on Friday 19 May at 9am and will encapsulate various private collections, including that of Dr Broido.
