Hepworth in Colour examines an often overlooked part of Hepworth’s work; the artist's meticulously purposeful use of colour, which she used in highly original and unexpected ways. The collection is made up of around 20 sculptures and 30 drawings, showing the marvellous range to Hepworth’s skill and mastery of multiple mediums. This wide-ranging exhibition shows off Hepworth's sculpture in dialogue with her painted and graphic works.
The highlight of the show is an extraordinary group of wood and stone sculptures which Hepworth carved in the 1940s, finishing each with striking blues and yellows painted into their curving interiors and sloping exteriors. Reflecting her time in Cornwall, these works call to mind the crashing of waves and undulating countryside. It was fascinating to hear Hepworth’s very precise instructions on how these pieces were to be exhibited, with regular cleaning and retouching of the paint to keep the colours as vibrant and luminous as possible. Within her instructions, Hepworth would prescribe the exact paint she used and from which company. Many of these have never previously been shown together and include key works from public and private collections, including as far afield as Australia and Hong Kong.
