We were delighted to welcome over 40 guests to our London gallery on the evening of 25 September for a special preview of our October Modern & Contemporary Art sale. The highlight of the evening was an inspiring talk by acclaimed illustrator, painter, and printmaker Chloë Cheese, whose work and legacy are deeply rooted in one of Britain’s most celebrated artistic communities.

An Evening with Chloë Cheese at Sworders London
The event was held in partnership with The Fry Art Gallery in Saffron Walden, a space dedicated to artists who lived and worked in the Essex village of Great Bardfield. Chloë Cheese grew up in this remarkable environment, the daughter of renowned artists Bernard Cheese and Sheila Robinson, and surrounded by influential figures such as Edward Bawden, John Aldridge, and Michael Rothenstein.

While the men of Great Bardfield have long been recognised, the women of the community - many of whom were equally pioneering - have often been overlooked. In line with Sworders’ ongoing commitment to promoting women artists in our Modern & Contemporary Art sales, Chloë’s talk focused on the extraordinary contributions of these women.

She offered captivating insights into the lives and practices of Charlotte Bawden, Lucie Aldridge, Olive Cook, and, of course, her mother Sheila Robinson, who collaborated with Edward Bawden at the Festival of Britain. As well as fascinating and amusing anecdotes from her childhood, it was wonderful to hear about Chloë’s experience as an artist and the evolving role of women in the creative world. The evening was thoroughly enjoyed by guests and staff alike, and we look forward to welcoming Chloë back for future events.
