The Gordon Gridley Collection

The Gordon Gridley Collection

A Passage Through Time

Sworders to sell the collection of Islington dealer Gordon Gridley in our summer Fine Interiors sale, 14-15 June.

18 May 2022

Around 200 lots comprising both pieces from Gridley’s personal collection and stock from his Camden Passage shop will form part of the Fine Interiors auction this June.

Gordon Gridley was one of the first dealers in the Islington area and a founding member of the Camden Passage antique dealers’ association. Trading in antiques from the late 1960s, he opened his first shop in 1971 and remained a well-known and respected figure in the antiques world until his recent retirement. Knowledgeable across a wide range of collecting fields – from English furniture and ceramics to folk art and French decorative antiques – for close to 50 years he travelled weekly across England and Europe to source items for his two shops and warehouse in London.

His customers at leading shows including the Fine Art and Antiques fair at Olympia and at the Battersea Park Decorative Fair were both dealers and interior designers from America and Europe, as well as private buyers who returned to him year after year.

With his retirement, bidders at Sworders will have the opportunity to acquire pieces that received Gordon Gridley’s seal of approval. The array of good quality and supremely decorative material ranges from cast iron garden furnishings, such as a large early 19th century neoclassical campana urn (£600-800) and a chair attributed to the Charles Young foundry in Edinburgh c.1850 (£300-500) to 19th century sculpture such as a French white marble model of Diana by Alfred Boucher (£1,000-1,500) and a plaster bust of a naval commander attributed to James Deville (£300-500).
